FUN FACTS!
If you're going to come to Yellowstone you're probably going to want to see some bears! Lots of us brown bears live here. People used to feed us from cars but we decided that wasn't a good idea. The bears got too used to the people, and that wasn't safe for either of us! But don't worry, we're certainly not the mean, grumpy creatures some folks think we are. As long as we enjoy each other's company from a distance, we'll all be safe!
Here's some cool facts about bears:
- Brown Bears are sometimes called Grizzly Bears, both names mean the same thing
- We only weigh about 1 pound when we're born (even less than you!)
- When we grow up we average around 400-500 pounds but we can weigh over 1600!
- When we stand straight up we can be
over 9 feet tall
- An average brown bear's feet measure about a foot long and 6 inches wide... that's like a size 20 shoe!
- We have an excellent sense of smell, maybe even as good as a bloodhound!
- We eat mostly nuts, berries, roots and occasionally other animals
- If you see us standing straight up, we're not angry, we're just getting a better look, and smell, of our surroundings
- The humps on our backs are big muscles that help us dig
- We usually live from 30-50 years
- We can run up to 35 mph in short bursts, that's faster than an Olympic sprinter!
- Please don't feed us! We get plenty of food on our own!

Our home in Yellowstone is famous for more than just us bears. It has the most geysers in one area than any other place on Earth; more than 300! What's a geyser? A geyser is a special kind of hot spring that builds up pressure over time and releases a big jet of steam and water into the air. Some erupt many times a day, like Old Faithful, and some only erupt once every few years.
Check out these interesting geyser facts:
- Yellowstone has about 2/3 of the geysers on Earth
- Despite it's name, Old Faithful is kind of unpredictable
- The time between eruptions depends on how long the last eruption lasted
- Old Faithful usually erupts every 76 minutes but it can be from 35 minutes to 2 hours
- Old Faithful can shoot up to 184 feet in the air!
- Water erupting geyser is hot, over 200 degrees, so enjoy them from a safe distance!
- We have the largest geyser in the world... Steamboat
- Steamboat can go as high as 300 feet. That's like a football field stood on end!
- One geyser, the Green Dragon, erupts boiling green water!
- Not all geysers erupt straight up, Ledge geyser erupts at an angle out of the side of a hill
- Minute geyser doesn't erupt anymore even though it used to every 60 seconds
- Careless people plugged Minute geyser by jamming it with rocks
- Please don't throw anything into geysers or hot springs, you can ruin the fun for ever
